Day-by-day Itinerary

Follow the route day by day. Open a day for the full plan.

  1. Day 1Arrival in Colombo

Welcome to Sri Lanka. When you arrive at Bandaranaike International Airport, your guide will meet you for a private transfer straight to your hotel in the city (35km / approx. 45 minutes). Take the rest of the day to rest and settle in after your flight.

    Overnight: Colombo

  2. Day 2The Cultural Triangle and Pinnawala

After breakfast, check out of your hotel and begin the drive to Sri Lanka’s renowned Cultural Triangle (175 km / approx. 4.5 hrs). Located in the central plains, this region brings together ancient cities, historic temples, wildlife parks, and scenic reservoirs. It features major UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including the impressive Sigiriya rock fortress and the ancient ruins of Polonnaruwa. Along the way, you will make a stop at Pinnawala to watch the elephants bathing in the river. Afterward, continue your journey to your accommodation.

    Overnight: Sigiriya

  3. Day 3Sigiriya Rock Fortress & Wildlife Safari

Start the day with a short drive to Sigiriya, commonly referred to as ‘Lion Rock’ (15km / approx. 20 mins). As a prominent UNESCO World Heritage Site, this massive rock pillar stands out clearly across the landscape. Formed from the hardened magma of an extinct volcano, its exact history is still debated today. The site is believed to be either an ancient Buddhist monastery or a 5th-century royal fortress built by King Kashyapa.

In the afternoon, head out for a two to three-hour jeep safari (20km / approx. 45 mins). Your main destination is Minneriya National Park, centered around a 3rd-century reservoir built by King Mahasena. The park attracts large herds of elephants that gather to graze on the plains and bathe in the water. You might also spot sambar deer, toque macaques, painted storks, and cormorants. Depending on current wildlife movements, your guide may take you to Kaudulla National Park or Hurulu Eco Park instead to secure the best viewing experience.

    Overnight: Sigiriya

  4. Day 4Dambulla Cave Temples and Kandy Culture

Begin your drive south toward Kandy, making a stop along the way to explore the Dambulla Cave Temples (105km / approx. 3 hrs). This UNESCO World Heritage Site dates back to the 1st century BC and features a remarkable complex of five caves. Originally used as a hiding place by an exiled king, he later commissioned impressive rock carvings upon reclaiming his throne. Over time, subsequent rulers expanded the site, and the caves now house more than 150 vivid Buddha paintings and statues.

Continue your journey into Kandy. In the late afternoon, attend a local performance featuring traditional Sri Lankan music, drumming, and cultural dance. Afterward, visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, locally known as Sri Dalada Maligawa, widely considered the country’s most revered Buddhist shrine. The temple features beautiful Sri Lankan art and intricate wood carvings. Arriving during the evening ‘puja’ allows you to observe locals gathering to offer flowers and wait for a glimpse of the golden casket believed to hold the sacred relic.

    Overnight: Kandy

  5. Day 5Kandy City Tour and Royal Botanical Gardens

Start your morning with breakfast before heading out on a guided tour of Kandy city. Later, take a short drive to the Peradeniya Botanic Gardens (10km / approx. 45 mins). Bordered on three sides by the Mahaweli River, these extensive gardens were founded in 1824 and maintain one of the world’s most impressive living plant collections. Enjoy a relaxed walk along pathways lined with royal palms, giant ficus trees, and a dedicated orchid house. The grounds also feature a diverse range of valuable hardwood trees, including teak, mahogany, satinwood, ebony, and tamarind.

    Overnight: Kandy

  6. Day 6Scenic Hill Country and Nuwara Eliya

Today, travel higher into Sri Lanka’s central highlands toward Nuwara Eliya (115km / approx. 3 hrs). Along the way, pause at a working tea plantation and factory to learn about the traditional tea-making process and see how different tea grades are sorted.

Situated at an elevation of 1,900 meters, Nuwara Eliya served as a popular 19th-century retreat for British residents drawn to its cool, comfortable climate. The town retains a distinct English character, complete with heritage bungalows featuring red and green roofs, a classic 18-hole golf course, and a historic racecourse. The surrounding slopes and valleys are covered in sprawling tea estates, intersected by mountain streams and waterfalls.

Take a guided walk through the town center to see the Victorian-era post office, the historic Hill Club, and the golf course, before stopping at the mid-19th-century Holy Trinity Church. After checking into your hotel, the remainder of the day is yours to relax at your own pace.

    Overnight: Nuwara Eliya

  7. Day 7Horton Plains and World’s End Hike

Depart your hotel early this morning, between 5:30 and 6:00 AM, for the drive to Horton Plains National Park (55km / approx. 2.5 hrs). Getting an early start is highly recommended, as thick mist often rolls in later in the day and blocks the viewpoints. We suggest asking your hotel the night before to prepare a packed breakfast to take with you.

Situated on Sri Lanka’s highest plateau at an elevation of over 2,100 meters, Horton Plains features a varied landscape that shifts from misty mountains and open grasslands to marshes, cold streams, and waterfalls. The park supports a wide range of wildlife, including sambar deer, purple-faced langurs (bear monkeys), barking deer, giant squirrels, fishing cats, and wild boar, alongside numerous bird and butterfly species.

Set out on a 9-kilometer, two-to-three-hour hike across the plains. Along the trail, you will pause at the scenic Baker’s Falls before reaching the World’s End escarpment, where the plateau drops suddenly in a sheer vertical cliff of nearly 1,000 meters. On clear mornings, this vantage point provides expansive, uninterrupted views across the valleys below. The hike is generally straightforward, though it does involve uneven terrain and a few steep sections.

    Overnight: Nuwara Eliya

  8. Day 8Journey South to Udawalawe National Park

Leave the hill country behind and drive south toward Udawalawe (155km / approx. 3 hrs). Along the way, visit the Hakgala Botanical Gardens, well-known for its extensive rose and orchid collections. Next, stop at the Buduruwagala rock temple to view its towering ancient Buddha sculptures carved directly into the cliff face. Continue your drive, passing the cascading Ravana Falls before arriving at your destination.

In the late afternoon, head into Udawalawe National Park for a guided jeep safari. Centered around a vast reservoir, this park is widely recognized as one of the most reliable places in Sri Lanka to observe wild elephants. Its open scrubland and light vegetation provide clear visibility, allowing frequent sightings of elephant herds grazing and interacting in their natural habitat. The park also supports water buffalo, sambar deer, monkeys, a rich variety of birdlife, and the occasional leopard.

    Overnight: Udawalawe

  9. Day 9Elephant Transit Home and Onward to Yala

Begin your morning with a visit to the Elephant Transit Home, located just on the border of the national park. This dedicated conservation facility rehabilitates orphaned elephant calves until they are healthy and mature enough to be reintroduced into the wild. From a designated viewing platform, you can watch as the young elephants follow their keepers into the open compound for their daily milk feeding.

Afterward, check out and begin your drive southeast toward the coastal scrublands of Yala.

    Overnight: Yala

  10. Day 10Full-Day Safari in Yala National Park

Day 10: Full-Day Safari in Yala National Park

Spend a full day exploring Yala National Park on a guided jeep safari. As one of the largest national parks in Sri Lanka, Yala features a diverse landscape of dry woodlands and open grassy plains that support a thriving wildlife population. The park is home to significant numbers of elephants, spotted deer, sambar, wild buffalo, jackals, mongooses, and crocodiles. Yala is also known for having one of the highest leopard densities in the world. While these big cats are naturally elusive, spotting one is a defining moment of any wildlife tour.

    Overnight: Yala

  11. Day 11Journey to Historic Galle

After breakfast, check out of your hotel and begin the drive along the southern coast to Galle (180km / approx. 3 hrs). Located on a promontory at the southwestern tip of the island, Galle is a character-filled town recognized as the best-preserved European-built fortified city in Asia. Constructed by the Dutch in the 17th century, the Galle Fort is now a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site. Spend the afternoon walking through its narrow, grid-like streets, passing weathered colonial architecture, local boutiques, and cafes, all contained within the grand stone walls of the fort.

    Overnight: Galle

  12. Day 12Mirissa Whale Watching

Start your day early with a 5:30 AM departure from your hotel for a short 30-minute drive to Mirissa Harbor. Here, you will board a large vessel and head out into the deep ocean for a dedicated whale and dolphin watching excursion. The round trip typically takes between three and four hours. Mirissa is widely regarded as the best location in Sri Lanka for marine wildlife tours. It serves as a prime feeding ground for blue whales—the largest animals on earth—which are frequently seen surfacing in the area.

    Overnight: Galle

  13. Day 13Leisure Day in Galle

Today is left entirely free for you to relax. Take the time to rest at your hotel, revisit your favorite spots within the Galle Fort at your own pace, or take a short ride to enjoy the nearby southern beaches.

    Overnight: Galle

  14. Day 14Departure or Beach Extension

Your journey concludes today. Depending on your onward travel plans, your driver will take you north to Colombo’s Bandaranaike International Airport in time for your departing flight (157 km / approx. 3 hrs), or transfer you directly to your chosen coastal accommodation to begin a beach stay.
