Day-by-day Itinerary

Follow the route day by day. Open a day for the full plan.

  1. Day 1Arrival and Drive to the Cultural Triangle

Welcome to Sri Lanka. After arriving at Bandaranaike International Airport, your guide will be waiting to greet you. Enjoy a comfortable private transfer directly to your hotel in the Cultural Triangle (175km / approx. 4 hrs). Take the remainder of the day to rest and settle in after your flight.

    Overnight: Habarana

  2. Day 2Sigiriya Rock Fortress and Wildlife Safari

Start your morning with a short trip to Sigiriya, widely known as ‘Lion Rock’ (15km / approx. 20 mins). As a prominent UNESCO World Heritage Site, this striking rock pillar stands out clearly across the landscape. Geologically, it is the hardened magma core of an extinct volcano. Its exact historical origins remain debated; it is believed to be either a 5th-century royal fortress built by King Kashyapa or an early Buddhist monastery.

In the afternoon, head out for a two to three-hour jeep safari (20km / approx. 45 mins). Your main destination is typically Minneriya National Park, centered around a 3rd-century reservoir built by King Mahasena. The park’s plains and forests attract large herds of elephants that gather to feed and bathe in the water. Keep an eye out for toque macaques, sambar deer, painted storks, and flocks of cormorants. Depending on current elephant migration patterns, your guide may route your safari to nearby Kaudulla National Park or Hurulu Eco Park to ensure the best possible wildlife viewing.

    Overnight: Habarana

  3. Day 3Dambulla Cave Temples and Kandy Culture

Today, begin your journey south toward the hill city of Kandy. Along the way, you will stop to explore the Dambulla Cave Temples (105km / approx. 3 hrs). Dating back to the 1st century BC, this UNESCO World Heritage Site features a remarkable network of five caves. Originally used as a sanctuary by an exiled king, he transformed the caves by commissioning intricate rock carvings after reclaiming his throne. Subsequent rulers expanded the site, which now holds over 150 vibrant paintings and statues of the Buddha.

After your visit, continue your drive into Kandy. In the late afternoon, attend a local performance showcasing traditional Sri Lankan music, drumming, and cultural dance. Afterward, visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, locally known as Sri Dalada Maligawa, widely considered the country’s most revered Buddhist shrine. Arriving during the evening ‘puja’ allows you to observe locals gathering to offer flowers and wait for a glimpse of the golden casket believed to hold the sacred relic.

    Overnight: Kandy

  4. Day 4Sri Lanka’s Tea Country and Onward to Ella

Today, travel higher into the central highlands toward Nuwara Eliya (115km / approx. 3 hrs). Along the way, stop at a working tea plantation and factory to learn about the traditional tea-making process and see how various grades of tea are produced.

Situated at an elevation of 1,900 meters, Nuwara Eliya served as a popular 19th-century retreat for British residents drawn to its cool climate. The town retains a distinct English character, complete with heritage bungalows featuring red and green roofs, a classic 18-hole golf course, and a historic racecourse. Take a guided walk through the town center to see the Victorian-era post office, the historic Hill Club, and the mid-19th-century Holy Trinity Church. After taking in the sights, continue your scenic drive through the mountains to the laid-back town of Ella.

    Overnight: Ella

  5. Day 5Ella Highlights and Udawalawe Safari

Wake up to views stretching across the valley toward Ella Rock. After an early breakfast, set out on a short hike up Little Adam’s Peak for expansive views over the surrounding landscape. Next, take a walk along the railway tracks to view the iconic Nine Arch Bridge. Before leaving Ella, stop for photos at the striking Ravana Falls. This waterfall holds a place in the famous Indian epic, the Ramayana; local legend claims that King Ravana hid Princess Sita in the caves just behind the cascading water.

Leave the highlands behind and drive south to Udawalawe National Park (90km / approx. 2.5 hrs). In the afternoon, head out on a guided jeep safari. Centered around a large reservoir, the park features open scrubland and light vegetation, making it one of the most reliable locations in Sri Lanka to observe wild elephants. You can easily watch herds grazing in their natural habitat. The park also supports water buffalo, sambar deer, monkeys, a rich variety of birdlife, and the occasional leopard.

    Overnight: Udawalawe

  6. Day 6Elephant Transit Home and Yala Safari

Begin your morning at the Elephant Transit Home, a conservation center located just on the border of Udawalawe. This facility cares for orphaned elephant calves until they are healthy enough to return to the wild. From a designated viewing platform, you can watch the young elephants eagerly follow their keepers into the open compound for their daily milk feeding.

Afterward, check out of your hotel and drive southeast to Yala National Park (90km / approx. 2 hrs). As one of Sri Lanka’s largest national parks, Yala features a diverse mix of dry woodlands and open grassy plains. It supports a wide range of wildlife, including elephants, spotted deer, sambar, wild buffalo, jackals, mongooses, and crocodiles. Yala is particularly well-known for having one of the highest leopard densities in the world. While these big cats are naturally secretive, spotting one is a clear highlight of the safari. The park also contains ancient ruins, adding a layer of historical interest to the natural landscape. In the late afternoon or evening, head out on a guided game drive to explore the reserve.

    Overnight: Yala

  7. Day 7Journey to Historic Galle

After breakfast, leave your hotel and travel along the southern coast toward Galle (180km / approx. 4.5 hrs). Situated on a promontory at the southwestern tip of the island, Galle is a character-filled town recognized as the best-preserved European-built fortified city in Asia. Spend the afternoon walking through the narrow, grid-like streets of the Galle Fort. The area is enclosed by massive stone walls and is filled with weathered colonial architecture, local boutiques, and cafes.

    Overnight: Galle

  8. Day 8Departure or Beach Extension

Your Sri Lankan journey wraps up today. Depending on your onward travel plans, your driver will take you north to Colombo’s Bandaranaike International Airport in time for your departing flight (157 km / approx. 3 hrs), or transfer you directly to your chosen coastal accommodation to begin a relaxed beach stay.
