Day-by-day Itinerary

Follow the route day by day. Open a day for the full plan.

  1. Day 1Arrival in Colombo

Welcome to Sri Lanka. After arriving at Bandaranaike International Airport, your guide will greet you for a comfortable private transfer directly to your city hotel (35km / approx. 45 minutes). Take the rest of the day to rest and settle in after your flight.

    Overnight: Colombo

  2. Day 2Journey to the Cultural Triangle

Following breakfast, check out of your hotel and travel toward Sri Lanka’s renowned Cultural Triangle (175 km / approx. 4.5 hrs). Located across the central plains, this region brings together historic temple ruins, ancient cities, wildlife parks, and scenic reservoirs. It is home to major UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including the impressive Sigiriya rock fortress and the vast archaeological remains of Polonnaruwa. With its deep historical roots and striking landscapes, spending time in this area is a clear highlight of the tour.

    Overnight: Sigiriya

  3. Day 3Ancient Polonnaruwa and Wildlife Safari

After breakfast, travel to the ancient city of Polonnaruwa, a key UNESCO World Heritage Site (46km / approx. 1.5 hrs). As Sri Lanka’s second oldest kingdom, it became the capital in 1070 AD when King Vijayabahu I defeated the Chola invaders and reunited the country. The city grew into a major commercial and religious hub over the next three centuries, peaking during the 12th century under King Parakramabahu I. Explore the remnants of his grand vision, including monumental buildings, expansive parks, and a massive reservoir designed for both agriculture and defense.

In the late afternoon, head out for a two to three-hour jeep safari. Your destination is typically Minneriya National Park, centered around a 3rd-century reservoir built by King Mahasena. The park’s plains and forests attract large herds of elephants that gather to feed and bathe in the water. Keep an eye out for toque macaques, sambar deer, painted storks, and flocks of cormorants. Depending on current elephant migration patterns, your guide may route your safari to nearby Kaudulla National Park or Hurulu Eco Park to ensure the best possible wildlife viewing.

    Overnight: Sigiriya

  4. Day 4Sigiriya Rock Fortress and Village Experience

Start the morning with a short trip to Sigiriya, widely recognized as ‘Lion Rock’ (15km / approx. 20 mins). As a major UNESCO World Heritage Site, this striking rock pillar stands out prominently across the landscape. Geologically, it is the hardened magma core of an extinct volcano. Its exact historical origins remain debated; it is believed to be either a 5th-century royal fortress built by King Kashyapa or an early Buddhist monastery.

Later, experience daily local culture with a private guided village tour. Take a traditional oxen cart ride, followed by a quiet catamaran trip across a village reservoir where you can look out for local wildlife. Finish the excursion by watching a local resident prepare a traditional Sri Lankan meal, which you will then sit down and share together for lunch.

    Overnight: Sigiriya

  5. Day 5Dambulla Cave Temples and Onward to Kandy

Today, begin your journey south toward the hill city of Kandy (105km / approx. 3 hrs). Along the way, you will stop to explore the Dambulla Cave Temples. Dating back to the 1st century BC, this UNESCO World Heritage Site features a remarkable network of five caves. Originally used as a sanctuary by an exiled king, he transformed the caves by commissioning intricate rock carvings after reclaiming his throne. Subsequent rulers expanded the site, which now holds over 150 vibrant paintings and statues of the Buddha. After your visit, continue your drive into Kandy to settle in for the evening.

    Overnight: Kandy

  6. Day 6Kandy City Tour, Botanical Gardens, and Culture

After breakfast, head out for a guided tour of Kandy. Following this, take a short drive to the Peradeniya Botanic Gardens (10km / approx. 45 mins). Bordered on three sides by the Mahaweli River, these sprawling grounds were established in 1824 and hold one of the world’s most extensive plant collections. Take a relaxed walk through the pathways to see a dedicated orchid house, avenues of royal palms, and impressive giant ficus trees. The gardens also feature a diverse range of prominent hardwood species, including teak, mahogany, ebony, satinwood, and tamarind.

In the late afternoon, attend a local performance showcasing traditional Sri Lankan music, drumming, and cultural dance. Afterward, visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, locally known as Sri Dalada Maligawa, widely considered the country’s most revered Buddhist shrine. The temple features beautiful Sri Lankan art and intricate wood carvings. Arriving during the evening ‘puja’ allows you to observe locals gathering to offer flowers and wait for a glimpse of the golden casket believed to hold the sacred relic.

    Overnight: Kandy

  7. Day 7Scenic Journey to Nuwara Eliya

Take a highly regarded train journey from Kandy to Nuwara Eliya, passing directly through Sri Lanka’s vibrant green tea estates. Along the way, you can interact with local vendors and take in expansive views of rural villages and towering railway bridges. Alternatively, you may choose to make the journey by private vehicle (115km / approx. 3 hrs), which follows a similarly scenic route up into the highlands.

    Overnight: Nuwara Eliya

  8. Day 8Journey South and Udawalawe Safari

Today, leave the hill country and travel south toward Udawalawe (128km / approx. 4 hrs). On the way, stop at the Hakgala Botanical Gardens to view its detailed rose and orchid collections. You will also pass the rushing waters of Ravana Falls and visit the ancient rock-carved Buddha sculptures at Buduruwagala.

After checking into your hotel, head out for an afternoon jeep safari in Udawalawe National Park. Centered around a large reservoir, this park features light vegetation, making it one of the most reliable locations in the country for observing wild elephants. You can easily watch herds grazing in the open scrubland. The park also supports water buffalo, sambar deer, monkeys, a rich variety of birdlife, and the occasional leopard.

    Overnight: Udawalawe

  9. Day 9Elephant Transit Home and Historic Galle

Start your morning at the Elephant Transit Home, a dedicated facility located on the park’s border that rehabilitates orphaned elephant calves for their eventual release into the wild. From a viewing barrier, watch the young elephants eagerly follow their keepers into the compound for their daily milk feeding.

Afterward, continue your drive to the southern coast to reach Galle. Situated on a southwestern promontory, Galle is highly regarded as the best-preserved European-built fortified city in Asia. Originally constructed by the Dutch in the 17th century, the Galle Fort is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Spend the afternoon walking its narrow streets, surrounded by massive stone walls, weathered colonial architecture, local cafes, and boutiques.

    Overnight: Galle

  10. Day 10Departure or Beach Extension

Your inland journey wraps up today. Depending on your travel plans, your driver will transfer you to Colombo’s Bandaranaike International Airport for your departing flight (190km / approx. 5 hrs), or take you directly to the coast to begin a relaxing beach stay.
