Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about travelling in Sri Lanka and planning your journey with us.
Planning your trip
Seasons, trip length and the paperwork to sort before you fly.
Why should I visit Sri Lanka?
Sri Lanka packs an extraordinary variety into one compact island: golden beaches, ancient cities and temples, misty tea plantations, rainforests and national parks full of wildlife, often only a few hours apart.
Add a warm, welcoming culture, centuries of heritage and some of the most flavourful food in Asia, and it is easy to see why many travellers call it one of the most rewarding destinations they have explored.
When is the best time to visit Sri Lanka?
Sri Lanka is a year-round destination because two monsoons affect different coasts at different times. The south and west coasts and the hill country are generally at their best from December to April, while the east coast is usually best from around May to September.
Weather varies from year to year and between regions, so we plan your route around the season you travel in.
How many days do I need to see Sri Lanka?
Around 10 to 14 days lets you enjoy the highlights at a comfortable pace: the Cultural Triangle, Kandy, the hill country around Ella, a safari and time on the coast.
With 7 days we recommend focusing on two or three regions rather than rushing. With three weeks or more you can add the north, the east coast or slower village stays.
Do I need a visa to visit Sri Lanka?
Most visitors need travel authorisation before arrival. Entry rules, fees and eligible nationalities change from time to time, so please check the latest requirements on the official Sri Lanka Department of Immigration and Emigration website before you book flights.
Places & experiences
What to see, taste and do across the island.
What are the top attractions in Sri Lanka?
Favourites include Sigiriya Rock Fortress, the ancient cities of Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa, the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic in Kandy, the scenic train ride to Ella and the Nine Arch Bridge, Galle Fort, and wildlife safaris in parks such as Yala, Udawalawe and Minneriya.
Beyond the famous names, we love showing travellers quieter places: local villages, hidden waterfalls, lesser-known temples and peaceful beaches.
What is Sri Lankan food like?
Sri Lankan cuisine is fragrant, colourful and often spicy. Rice and curry with several vegetable, lentil and meat or fish dishes is the everyday favourite, alongside hoppers, string hoppers, kottu roti, coconut sambol and fresh seafood on the coast.
Vegetarian and vegan options are plentiful, and most kitchens are happy to adjust the spice level if you ask.
Where can I see wildlife in Sri Lanka?
Yala and Wilpattu are known for leopards, Udawalawe and Minneriya for elephants, and the south coast around Mirissa for seasonal whale watching. Sinharaja rainforest is a highlight for birdwatchers.
Sightings are never guaranteed. We choose responsible operators who keep a respectful distance from animals.
Getting around
Transport options and travelling with confidence.
How can I travel around Sri Lanka?
A private car with a local driver-guide is the most comfortable and flexible way to explore, and it is how most of our journeys are arranged. Scenic trains, especially between Kandy and Ella, are an experience in themselves.
For short hops, tuk-tuks are everywhere, and public buses are an inexpensive option for more adventurous travellers.
Is Sri Lanka a safe place to travel?
Sri Lanka is a welcoming destination visited by many international travellers each year. As anywhere, take everyday precautions with valuables, use licensed transport, and follow local guidance on swimming conditions and wildlife.
