Day 1Arrival and Drive to the Cultural Triangle
Welcome to Sri Lanka. Upon arriving at Bandaranaike International Airport, your guide will meet you for a private transfer directly to your hotel in the Cultural Triangle (222km / approx. 4 hrs). Along the way, you will take a break at Pinnawala to watch the elephants bathing in the river. Situated in the central plains, the Cultural Triangle brings together wildlife parks, scenic reservoirs, and historic ancient cities. The region is home to major UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including the impressive Sigiriya rock fortress and the extensive ruins of Polonnaruwa, making it a clear highlight of your trip.
Overnight: Sigiriya
Day 2Sigiriya Rock Fortress and Wildlife Safari
Start your morning with a short drive to Sigiriya, commonly known as ‘Lion Rock’ (15km / approx. 20 mins). As a prominent UNESCO World Heritage Site, this towering rock pillar stands out clearly across the surrounding landscape. Geologically formed from the hardened magma of an extinct volcano, its exact history remains debated. The site is believed to be either an early Buddhist monastery or a 5th-century royal fortress built by King Kashyapa.
In the afternoon, head out for a two to three-hour jeep safari (20km / approx. 45 mins). Your main destination is Minneriya National Park, centered around a 3rd-century reservoir built by King Mahasena. The park attracts large herds of elephants that gather to graze on the open plains and bathe in the water. You might also spot sambar deer, toque macaques, painted storks, and cormorants. Depending on current wildlife movements, your guide may route your safari to nearby Kaudulla National Park or Hurulu Eco Park instead to ensure the best possible viewing experience.
Overnight: Sigiriya
Day 3Dambulla Cave Temples and Kandy Culture
Today, begin your journey south toward the hill city of Kandy, stopping along the way to explore the Dambulla Cave Temples (105km / approx. 3 hrs). This UNESCO World Heritage Site dates back to the 1st century BC. Over time, ancient rulers expanded and improved the complex, and the caves now house more than 150 vivid Buddha paintings and statues painted directly onto the rock walls.
Continue your drive into Kandy. In the late afternoon, attend a local performance featuring traditional Sri Lankan music, drumming, and cultural dance. Afterward, visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, locally known as Sri Dalada Maligawa, widely considered the country’s most revered Buddhist shrine. The temple features beautiful Sri Lankan art and intricate wood carvings. Arriving during the evening ‘puja’ allows you to observe locals gathering to offer flowers and wait for a glimpse of the golden casket believed to hold the sacred relic.
Overnight: Kandy
Day 4Journey to Udawalawe National Park
Leave Kandy today and make the long, scenic drive south toward Udawalawe National Park (235km / approx. 6 hrs). After arriving and settling in, head out for an afternoon jeep safari. Centered around a large reservoir, Udawalawe features light vegetation and open scrubland, making it one of the most reliable locations in Sri Lanka to observe wild elephants. You can easily watch herds grazing and roaming in their natural habitat. The park also supports water buffalo, sambar deer, monkeys, a rich variety of birdlife, and occasionally, leopards.
Overnight: Udawalawe
Day 5Sinharaja Rainforest Trek
Today, travel to the Sinharaja Rainforest to spend time exploring its trails (80km / approx. 3 hrs). Head out on a guided nature trek through the dense tropical forest environment to view its unique plant and animal life up close. After completing your hike, you will make the drive back to your hotel to relax for the evening.
Overnight: Udawalawe
Day 6Elephant Transit Home and Departure
Begin your morning at the Elephant Transit Home, a dedicated facility located on the border of Udawalawe National Park. This center rehabilitates orphaned elephant calves for their eventual return to the wild. From a designated viewing platform, you can watch the young elephants eagerly follow their keepers into the open compound for their daily milk feeding.
Following your visit, your inland tour comes to a close. Your driver will transfer you to Colombo’s Bandaranaike International Airport for your departing flight (190km / approx. 5 hrs), or take you directly to your chosen coastal accommodation to begin a beach stay.
