Day 1Arrival in Colombo and Transfer to the Cultural Triangle
Welcome to Sri Lanka! Upon your arrival at Bandaranaike International Airport in Colombo, your private guide will meet you for a direct transfer to your hotel in Habarana, located in the heart of the Cultural Triangle (175km / approx. 4 hours). Take the rest of the day to relax and settle in after your flight. Overnight in Habarana
Day 2Sigiriya Rock Fortress and Minneriya Elephant Safari
Start your morning with a short trip to Sigiriya, widely known as Lion Rock (15km / approx. 20 mins). This massive rock pillar, formed from the hardened magma of an extinct volcano, stands high above the surrounding plains as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Its origins remain a subject of historical debate, serving either as an elaborate royal fortress built by King Kashyapa in the 5th century or as a secluded Buddhist monastery.
In the late afternoon, proceed to Minneriya National Park for a 2 to 3-hour jeep safari (20km / approx. 45 mins). The park is centered around the 3rd-century Minneriya Tank, where large herds of wild elephants gather to feed and bathe. You may also spot sambar deer, toque macaques, and flocks of painted storks and cormorants. Depending on current elephant migration patterns, your guide might route the safari to nearby Kaudulla National Park or Hurulu Eco Park to ensure the best wildlife viewing. Overnight in Habarana
Day 3Dambulla Cave Temples and Kandy Cultural Heritage
Begin your journey south toward the historic city of Kandy, stopping along the way to explore the Dambulla Cave Temples (105km / approx. 3 hours). Dating back to the 1st century BC, this UNESCO World Heritage site features a complex of five natural caves. It originally provided refuge for an exiled king, who commissioned elaborate rock carvings after reclaiming his throne. Over time, subsequent rulers expanded the site, which now holds over 150 Buddha statues and highly detailed wall murals.
Continue your drive into Kandy. In the late afternoon, head to a local hall to experience a live performance of traditional Sri Lankan music, drumming, and cultural dance.
Following the show, visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic (Sri Dalada Maligawa), considered the island’s most important Buddhist shrine. You will attend during the evening ‘puja’ ceremony, joining local pilgrims who bring floral offerings and wait in line for a glimpse of the golden casket believed to hold the sacred relic. Overnight in Kandy
Day 4Kandy Sightseeing and Peradeniya Botanic Gardens
Following breakfast, head out for a guided tour of Kandy. Afterward, travel to the Peradeniya Botanic Gardens (10km / approx. 45 mins) for a relaxing walk through its extensive grounds. Bordered on three sides by the Mahaweli River, these gardens were established in 1824 and maintain one of the largest plant and tree collections in the world. Enjoy a quiet stroll among the towering royal palms and the vibrant plant life before returning to your hotel. Overnight in Kandy
Day 5Scenic Hill Country Train to Nuwara Eliya
Today features a transit from Kandy into the central highlands toward Nuwara Eliya. Board the train for a highly scenic rail journey, taking you past bright green tea estates, rural villages, and over elevated railway bridges. Along the way, you can interact with local vendors selling snacks through the train cars. In the event that train tickets are unavailable, you will travel by road instead (115km / approx. 3 hours), following a beautiful route that winds through the tea-growing region. Overnight in Nuwara Eliya
Day 6Lipton’s Seat, Tea Factory, and Transfer to Ella
After breakfast, drive to the famous Lipton’s Seat. This high-altitude vantage point is where Scottish tea baron Sir Thomas Lipton once sat to survey his growing plantation empire, and the site now features a life-sized statue of him on a bench. The lookout offers sweeping panoramic views; on a clear day, you can see across five provinces, taking in landmarks like Handapanagala Lake, Chandrika Lake, Udawalawe Lake, the Wedihiti Kanda mountains, and even the southern coastal harbor of Hambantota.
While in the area, you will tour the historic Lipton tea factory to see the production process firsthand. You will also take a short, open-air tuk-tuk ride to comfortably explore the immediate tea trails before continuing your drive into the mountain town of Ella. Overnight in Ella
Day 7Little Adam’s Peak, Nine Arch Bridge, and Transfer to Yala
After an early breakfast, take a short hike up Little Adam’s Peak for expansive views across the valley toward Ella Rock. Next, walk along the railway to a viewpoint overlooking the iconic Nine Arch Bridge. Before leaving the Ella area, stop for photos at the Rawana Ella waterfall. This prominent fall is tied to the ancient Indian epic, the Ramayana; local legend states that King Rawana hid the kidnapped Princess Sita in the caves just behind the water. In the afternoon, drive south toward the dry plains of Yala (120km / approx. 3 hours). Overnight in Yala
Day 8Full-Day Wildlife Safari in Yala National Park
Spend the entire day exploring Yala National Park on a guided jeep safari. As one of the country’s largest wildlife reserves, Yala features a diverse landscape of dry woodlands and open grasslands that support a wide variety of animals. The park is home to wild elephants, spotted deer, sambar, water buffalo, jackals, mongooses, and crocodiles. Most notably, Yala is recognized for having one of the highest densities of leopards in the world. While these big cats remain elusive, spending a full day in the park maximizes your chances of a valuable sighting. Overnight in Yala
Day 9Coastal Drive to Historic Galle Fort
Leave the wilderness behind this morning and drive west along the coast to the city of Galle (180km / approx. 4.5 hours). Located on a promontory at the island’s southwest tip, Galle is recognized as the best-preserved European fortified city in Asia. Constructed primarily by the Dutch in the 17th century, the fort is now a designated UNESCO World Heritage site. Spend the afternoon walking its grid of narrow streets, taking in the colonial-era architecture, boutique shops, and local cafes, all enclosed by massive stone ramparts. Overnight in Galle
Day 10Airport Departure or Beach Extension
When your tour concludes, take a direct transfer north to the Colombo airport for your departing flight (157km / approx. 3 hours). Alternatively, you can choose to extend your holiday with a relaxing stay on the southern coast.
