Day-by-day Itinerary

Follow the route day by day. Open a day for the full plan.

  1. Day 1Arrival in Colombo and Transfer to Sigiriya

Welcome to Sri Lanka. Upon arrival at Colombo’s Bandaranaike International Airport, your guide will meet you for a private transfer to your hotel in Sigiriya (150km / approx. 3.5 hours). Take the rest of the day to settle in and relax after your flight. Overnight in Sigiriya

  2. Day 2Sigiriya Rock, Ancient Polonnaruwa, and Wildlife Safari

Start the morning with a short drive to Sigiriya, also known as Lion Rock (15km / approx. 15 mins). This massive rock pillar, formed from the magma plug of an extinct volcano, is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a defining landmark of the island. While its exact origins are still debated, it served either as an elaborate royal fortress built by King Kashyapa in the 5th century or as an ancient Buddhist monastery.

Next, visit Polonnaruwa, Sri Lanka’s second-oldest kingdom. Established as the capital in 1070 AD by King Vijayabahu I, the city later flourished into a major commercial and religious hub under King Parakramabahu I in the 12th century. He built large parks, impressive structures, and a vast reservoir that provided both water and defense. Today, the archaeological park features these remarkably preserved ruins within an easily walkable area.

In the late afternoon, head to Minneriya National Park for a 2 to 3-hour jeep safari (20km / approx. 45 mins). Centered around the 3rd-century Minneriya Tank, the park’s open plains and forests attract large herds of wild elephants that gather to feed and bathe. Keep an eye out for sambar deer, toque macaques, painted storks, and cormorants. Depending on current elephant migration patterns, your guide may shift the safari to the nearby Kaudulla National Park or Hurulu Eco Park to ensure the best wildlife viewing. Overnight in Sigiriya

  3. Day 3Dambulla Cave Temples and Kandy Cultural Tour

Begin your drive south toward Kandy, pausing along the way to explore the Dambulla Cave Temples (105km / approx. 3 hours). Dating back to the 1st century BC, this UNESCO World Heritage site features a complex of five natural caves. It originally served as a refuge for an exiled king, who commissioned detailed rock carvings after reclaiming his throne. Over time, subsequent rulers added to the site, which now houses over 150 Buddha statues and elaborate wall murals.

Continue your journey into the city of Kandy. In the late afternoon, visit a local hall to watch a live performance featuring traditional Sri Lankan music, drumming, and cultural dance.

Following the performance, head to the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic (Sri Dalada Maligawa). This highly venerated shrine is recognized for its intricate woodwork and classical Sri Lankan art. You will visit during the evening ‘puja’ ceremony, a time when local pilgrims gather to offer flowers and line up to view the golden casket believed to hold the sacred relic. Overnight in Kandy

  4. Day 4Scenic Hill Country Drive to Nuwara Eliya

Travel through Sri Lanka’s central highlands today en route to Nuwara Eliya (115km / approx. 3 hours). Along the way, visit a working tea plantation and factory to observe the production process and learn about different Ceylon tea grades.

Set at an elevation of 1,900 meters, Nuwara Eliya is the core of the island’s tea region. Its cooler climate made it a favored 19th-century retreat for the British. The town retains a distinct colonial character, featuring English-style country homes, red and green-roofed plantation bungalows, a racecourse, and an 18-hole golf course. The surrounding landscape consists of steep valleys covered in vibrant green tea bushes, cut by natural streams and waterfalls.

Explore the town center on foot, walking past the red-brick Victorian post office, the historic Hill Club, and the golf course. The tour concludes with a visit to the mid-19th century Holy Trinity Church. Afterward, transfer to your hotel and enjoy a relaxed evening. Overnight in Nuwara Eliya

  5. Day 5Hill Country Train Journey to Ella

Today features a highly sought-after rail experience. You will be transferred to the Nanu Oya station to board your pre-booked train to Ella (115km / approx. 3 hours). The route winds through steep hillsides, offering excellent views of working tea estates and cascading waterfalls. (Note: local train schedules and travel times can occasionally be subject to delays).

Upon arrival at the Ella railway station, your driver will meet you for a quick transfer to your accommodation (3km / approx. 20 mins) where you can settle in for the night. Overnight in Ella

  6. Day 6Descent to the Coastal Town of Wadduwa

Leave the cool mountain air behind this morning as you drive down to the western coast, arriving in Wadduwa (190km / approx. 5 hours). Once you reach your hotel, the remainder of the day is yours to rest and relax by the ocean. Overnight in Wadduwa

  7. Day 7Airport Transfer or Beach Extension

When it is time to depart, enjoy a direct transfer back to the airport for your onward flight (75km / approx. 1.5 hours). Alternatively, you can choose to extend your holiday with a longer stay on the beach.
