Day-by-day Itinerary

Follow the route day by day. Open a day for the full plan.

  1. Day 1Arrival and Transfer to Sigiriya

Welcome to Sri Lanka. After arriving at Bandaranaike International Airport in Colombo, your guide will meet you for a direct private transfer to your hotel in Sigiriya (150km / approx. 3.5 hrs). Settle in and rest after your flight to prepare for the cultural explorations ahead.

    Overnight: Sigiriya

  2. Day 2Sigiriya Rock Fortress and Ancient Polonnaruwa

Start your morning with a short drive to Sigiriya, commonly known as ‘Lion Rock’ (15km / approx. 15 mins). As a major UNESCO World Heritage Site, this striking rock pillar stands out clearly against the surrounding landscape. Geologically formed from the hardened magma of an extinct volcano, its exact historical roots remain a subject of debate. The ruins are believed to be either an early Buddhist monastery or a 5th-century royal fortress built by King Kashyapa.

In the late afternoon, travel to the ancient city of Polonnaruwa, another significant UNESCO World Heritage Site (46km / approx. 1.5 hrs). Serving as Sri Lanka’s second oldest kingdom, it was established as the capital in 1070 AD by King Vijayabahu I after defeating Chola invaders. The city thrived as a religious and commercial center, peaking in the 12th century under King Parakramabahu I. He oversaw the construction of monumental buildings, parks, and a massive reservoir used for both agriculture and defense.

Today, the archaeological park holds a dense collection of well-preserved ruins. Begin your visit at the Polonnaruwa Museum to gain context about the site, then proceed to the Gal Viharaya, a revered Buddhist shrine featuring four impressive Buddha statues carved directly from a granite rock face. Your tour will also take you to the Nissanka Latha Mandapaya with its unique stone columns, the towering Lankathilaka Temple, and the remaining stone walls of the Royal Palace.

    Overnight: Sigiriya

  3. Day 3Dambulla Cave Temples and Kandy Culture

Today, begin your journey south toward the hill city of Kandy, stopping along the way to explore the Dambulla Cave Temples (105km / approx. 3 hrs). This UNESCO World Heritage Site dates back to the 1st century BC and features a remarkable network of five caves. Originally used as a hiding place by an exiled king, he transformed the site by commissioning impressive rock carvings upon reclaiming his throne. Over time, subsequent rulers expanded the complex, and the caves now house more than 150 vivid Buddha paintings and statues.

Continue your drive into Kandy. In the late afternoon, attend a local performance featuring traditional Sri Lankan music, drumming, and cultural dance. Afterward, visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, locally known as Sri Dalada Maligawa, widely considered the country’s most revered Buddhist shrine. The temple is noted for its beautiful Sri Lankan art and detailed wood carvings. Arriving during the evening ‘puja’ allows you to observe pilgrims gathering to offer flowers and wait for a glimpse of the golden casket believed to hold the sacred relic.

    Overnight: Kandy

  4. Day 4Hill Country Drive to Nuwara Eliya

Travel through Sri Lanka’s scenic hill country today as you make your way to Nuwara Eliya (115km / approx. 3 hours). Along the way, visit a working tea plantation and factory to see how local tea is produced and learn about the different grades.

Set at an elevation of 1,900 meters, Nuwara Eliya is the center of the island’s tea region. Its cooler climate made it a popular 19th-century retreat for the British, and the town still reflects that history. You will notice English-style country homes, plantation bungalows with red and green roofs, a racecourse, and an 18-hole golf course. The surrounding valleys are heavily planted with bright green tea bushes, broken only by natural streams and waterfalls.

Take a walk through the town center to see the historic Victorian post office, the old Hill Club, and the golf course. The walk also includes a stop at the mid-19th century Holy Trinity Church. Afterward, check into your hotel and spend the rest of the day relaxing at your own pace. Overnight in Nuwara Eliya

  5. Day 5Transfer to the Coast at Wadduwa

This morning, leave the hills behind and drive down to the coastal town of Wadduwa (190km / approx. 5 hours). Once you arrive at your hotel, the remainder of the day is yours to unwind by the ocean. Overnight in Wadduwa

  6. Day 6Departure or Beach Stay

When it is time to leave, take a direct transfer back to the airport for your departing flight (75km / approx. 1.5 hours). Alternatively, you can choose to continue your holiday by extending your stay on the beach.
