Day-by-day Itinerary

Follow the route day by day. Open a day for the full plan.

  1. Day 1Arrival in Colombo

Welcome to Sri Lanka! Upon arriving at Bandaranaike International Airport, your guide will be waiting to greet you. Enjoy a comfortable private transfer directly to your hotel in the city to rest and settle in (35km / approx. 45 minutes). Overnight: Colombo

  2. Day 2Journey to the Cultural Triangle

After breakfast at your hotel, begin your drive toward Sri Lanka’s famous Cultural Triangle (175 km / approx. 4.5 hours). Set within the central plains, this region naturally blends ancient cities and ruined temples with scenic reservoirs and national parks. It is home to remarkable UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including the iconic Sigiriya rock fortress and the vast archaeological ruins of Polonnaruwa. With its deep historical roots and striking landscapes, spending time in this area is a clear highlight of the journey. Overnight: Sigiriya

  3. Day 3Sigiriya Rock Fortress and Village Tour

Start your morning with a short drive to Sigiriya, widely known as the ‘Lion Rock’ (15km / approx. 20 mins). As one of Sri Lanka’s most prominent UNESCO World Heritage Sites, this towering rock pillar dominates the surrounding landscape. Geologically formed from the magma of an extinct volcano, its historical roots remain a fascinating debate. The ruins are believed to be either a 5th-century royal fortress built by King Kashyapa or an ancient Buddhist monastery.

Later, experience local culture firsthand with a private guided village tour. Enjoy a traditional oxen cart ride, followed by a quiet catamaran trip across a village reservoir where you can look out for local wildlife. Finish the experience by watching a resident prepare a traditional Sri Lankan meal, which you will then sit down and share together for lunch.

    Overnight: Sigiriya

  4. Day 4Ancient Polonnaruwa and Wildlife Safari

After breakfast, travel to the ancient city of Polonnaruwa, another key UNESCO World Heritage Site (46km / approx. 1.5 hrs). As Sri Lanka’s second oldest kingdom, it was established as the capital in 1070 AD by King Vijayabahu I after he reunited the country. The city flourished as a religious and commercial hub for three centuries, peaking during the 12th century under King Parakramabahu I. Explore the remnants of his grand vision, including expansive parks, monumental buildings, and a massive reservoir built for both defense and agriculture.

In the afternoon, head out for a two to three-hour jeep safari (20km / approx. 45 mins). Your destination is typically Minneriya National Park, centered around a 3rd-century reservoir. The park’s forests and plains attract large herds of elephants looking to graze and bathe. Keep an eye out for sambar deer, toque macaques, painted storks, and flocks of cormorants. Depending on current elephant migration patterns, your guide may route your safari to the nearby Kaudulla National Park or Hurulu Eco Park to ensure the best possible wildlife viewing.

    Overnight: Sigiriya

  5. Day 5Dambulla Cave Temples and Onward to Kandy

Today, begin your journey south toward the hill city of Kandy (105km / approx. 3 hrs). Along the way, you will stop to explore the Dambulla Cave Temples. Dating back to the 1st century BC, this UNESCO World Heritage Site features a remarkable network of five caves. Originally used as a sanctuary by an exiled king, he transformed the caves by commissioning intricate rock carvings after reclaiming his throne. Subsequent rulers expanded the site, which now holds over 150 vibrant paintings and statues of the Buddha. After your visit, continue your drive into Kandy to settle in for the evening.

    Overnight: Kandy

  6. Day 6Kandy City Tour and Botanical Gardens

After breakfast, head out to explore the cultural highlights of Kandy. Following your city tour, make the short journey to the beautiful Peradeniya Botanic Gardens (10km / approx. 45 mins). Bordered on three sides by the Mahaweli River, these sprawling grounds were established in 1824 and hold one of the world’s most extensive plant collections. Take a relaxed walk through the pathways to discover a dedicated orchid house, avenues of royal palms, and impressive giant ficus trees. The gardens also feature a diverse range of prominent hardwood species, including teak, mahogany, ebony, satinwood, and tamarind.

    Overnight: Kandy

  7. Day 7The Hill Country and Nuwara Eliya

Today, journey upward into Sri Lanka’s scenic hill country toward Nuwara Eliya (115km / approx. 3 hrs). Along the way, pause at a working tea plantation and factory. Here, you will learn the step-by-step process of traditional tea production and see firsthand how different grades of tea are classified.

Set at an elevation of 1,900 meters, Nuwara Eliya was a popular 19th-century retreat for British residents drawn to its cooler climate. The town retains a strong English atmosphere, characterized by heritage bungalows with red and green roofs, a classic 18-hole golf course, and a historic racecourse. The surrounding mountain slopes and valleys are densely covered in lush tea estates, intersected by mountain streams and cascading waterfalls.

Enjoy a guided walk through the town center, passing the red-brick Victorian post office, the old Hill Club, and the golf course, before stopping at the mid-19th-century Holy Trinity Church. Afterward, check into your hotel and spend the rest of the afternoon relaxing at your own pace.

    Overnight: Nuwara Eliya

  8. Day 8Departure or Beach Extension

Your inland journey concludes today. Depending on your onward plans, you will either begin the drive back to Bandaranaike International Airport for your departing flight (190km / approx. 5 hrs) or transfer to the coast to begin a relaxing beach stay.
