After breakfast, head out for a guided tour of Kandy. Following this, take a short drive to the Peradeniya Botanic Gardens (10km / approx. 45 mins). Bordered on three sides by the Mahaweli River, these sprawling grounds were established in 1824 and hold one of the world’s most extensive plant collections. Take a relaxed walk through the pathways to see a dedicated orchid house, avenues of royal palms, and impressive giant ficus trees. The gardens also feature a diverse range of prominent hardwood species, including teak, mahogany, ebony, satinwood, and tamarind.
In the late afternoon, attend a local performance showcasing traditional Sri Lankan music, drumming, and cultural dance. Afterward, visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, locally known as Sri Dalada Maligawa, widely considered the country’s most revered Buddhist shrine. The temple features beautiful Sri Lankan art and intricate wood carvings. Arriving during the evening ‘puja’ allows you to observe locals gathering to offer flowers and wait for a glimpse of the golden casket believed to hold the sacred relic.
