Begin your journey south toward the historic city of Kandy, stopping along the way to explore the Dambulla Cave Temples (105km / approx. 3 hours). Dating back to the 1st century BC, this UNESCO World Heritage site features a complex of five natural caves. It originally provided refuge for an exiled king, who commissioned elaborate rock carvings after reclaiming his throne. Over time, subsequent rulers expanded the site, which now holds over 150 Buddha statues and highly detailed wall murals.
Continue your drive into Kandy. In the late afternoon, head to a local hall to experience a live performance of traditional Sri Lankan music, drumming, and cultural dance.
Following the show, visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic (Sri Dalada Maligawa), considered the island’s most important Buddhist shrine. You will attend during the evening ‘puja’ ceremony, joining local pilgrims who bring floral offerings and wait in line for a glimpse of the golden casket believed to hold the sacred relic.
