Today, journey upward into Sri Lanka’s scenic hill country toward Nuwara Eliya (115km / approx. 3 hrs). Along the way, pause at a working tea plantation and factory. Here, you will learn the step-by-step process of traditional tea production and see firsthand how different grades of tea are classified.
Set at an elevation of 1,900 meters, Nuwara Eliya was a popular 19th-century retreat for British residents drawn to its cooler climate. The town retains a strong English atmosphere, characterized by heritage bungalows with red and green roofs, a classic 18-hole golf course, and a historic racecourse. The surrounding mountain slopes and valleys are densely covered in lush tea estates, intersected by mountain streams and cascading waterfalls.
Enjoy a guided walk through the town center, passing the red-brick Victorian post office, the old Hill Club, and the golf course, before stopping at the mid-19th-century Holy Trinity Church. Afterward, check into your hotel and spend the rest of the afternoon relaxing at your own pace.
