This May, Sri Lanka prepares for one of its most meaningful celebrations – Vesak Festival 2025. On Monday, May 12, Buddhists across the island will observe the sacred day that marks the birth, enlightenment, and passing of Lord Buddha.
What Is Vesak Kalapaya?
During the Vesak season, many towns and cities set up special zones called Vesak Kalapaya. These areas come alive with glowing lanterns, colorful pandals (thoranas), and devotional music. Families gather, lights shine late into the night, and the whole country takes on a calm, festive feel.
If you’re planning to explore or join the celebrations, here are some of the best-known Vesak Kalapaya locations this year:
Top Vesak Kalapaya to Visit in 2025
👉 Nuwara Eliya: Hosts the State Vesak Festival 2025 from May 10 to 16. Events will be held at the International Buddhist Centre with the theme “Bhajetha Mitte Kalyana – Bhajetha Purisuttame”, meaning “Keep good company”.
👉 Colombo: The Buddha Rashmi National Vesak Festival returns to Gangaramaya Temple and Beira Lake from May 13 to 16. Expect dazzling lights, large-scale lanterns, and performances.

Sri Lanka’s Role on the Global Stage
Ahead of Vesak, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake was invited to Vietnam to open the 20th United Nations Day of Vesak Celebrations. Held from May 4 to 6, this event celebrates Buddhism’s global message of peace and harmony. His visit also strengthened diplomatic ties and shared values between the two nations.
