Today marks a significant event in the Esala Perahera festival, known as the Final Randoli Perahera, or the Grand Randoli Procession, in Kandy, Sri Lanka.

This day is special because it brings together the processions from four ancient temples, collectively known as the “Sathara Maha Devalaya” (Four Great Temples), which are integral to the religious and cultural heritage of the region. These temples are dedicated to the deities Vishnu, Naatha, Katharagama, and Paththini.

The temples, except for the Katharagama Devalaya, are located within the Senkadagala Royal Complex in Kandy. They hold great significance during the annual Kandy Esala Perahera, especially in the “Sathara Mangalya” (Four Festivals) of the Sacred Tooth Relic. Since the reign of King Kirthi Sri Rajasinghe in 1753, these four temples have played a vital role in the Perahera, with their processions following the grand Dalada Perahera, which honors the Sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha.

Today’s Grand Randoli Procession is the culmination of the entire Perahera festival, showcasing the rich cultural and religious traditions of Sri Lanka.

The vibrant and colorful processions, with dancers, drummers, and caparisoned elephants, create a mesmerizing spectacle that reflects the unity of these four deities in blessing the land and its people. This day serves as a reminder of the deep-rooted traditions that have been preserved and celebrated in Kandy for centuries.
