Travel through the central highlands today as you make your way to Nuwara Eliya (115km / approx. 3 hours). Along the route, stop at a working tea plantation and factory to learn about the production process and understand the different Ceylon tea grades.
Located at an elevation of 1,900 meters, Nuwara Eliya serves as the center of Sri Lanka’s tea-growing region. Its cool climate made it a popular 19th-century retreat for the British, and the town retains a distinct colonial character. The surrounding landscape consists of steep valleys covered in bright green tea bushes, natural streams, and waterfalls. In town, you will notice English-style country homes, a racecourse, an 18-hole golf course, and plantation bungalows with red and green roofs. Take a walking tour through the town center, passing the red-brick Victorian post office and the historic Hill Club, before finishing at the mid-19th century Holy Trinity Church. Spend the rest of the day at your leisure. Overnight in Nuwara Eliya or Ella
