We talk a lot on The Hidden Sri Lanka about quiet beaches, off-the-grid surf spots, and undiscovered mountain trails. But sometimes, the most incredible journeys happen right on our main roads.
Today, April 22, 2026, something truly historic kicked off in Dambulla.
A group of Buddhist monks, led by Venerable Pannakara Thero from the United States, took their first steps in a 7-day pilgrimage across the island. If you follow global news, you might already recognize them. They just finished walking 2,300 miles across America, spreading a message of mindfulness and compassion.
Now, they are here. And they brought a very special, four-legged friend with them.
Here is what you need to know about the 2026 Walk for Peace in Sri Lanka, the sacred gift they are carrying, and how you can witness it yourself.
Walk for Peace
From America to Dambulla: The Journey So Far
The core idea behind the Walk for Peace is simple. You do not force peace. You cultivate it, step by step.
The monks started their massive US trek in Texas back in October 2025 and finished in Washington, D.C. in February. When President Anura Kumara Dissanayake invited them to bring that exact same spirit to our island, they accepted. They arrived in Sri Lanka on Tuesday, and yesterday, the official walking route began from the Dambulla Royal Cave Temple.
They are covering roughly 117 miles (188 km) over the next week, heading down through Matale, Kandy, Kegalle, and finally ending at Independence Square in Colombo on April 28th.
Who is Aloka the Peace Dog?
You cannot talk about the Walk for Peace without talking about Aloka.
Aloka is a former stray pariah dog from India. A few years ago, he started following a group of monks on a pilgrimage. He got hit by a car, fell terribly ill, but he absolutely refused to leave their side. The monks officially adopted him, brought him to the US, and he became an absolute internet sensation during the American peace walk.
Aloka
Seeing Aloka arrive at the airport here in Sri Lanka earlier this week was surreal. He even has special security arrangements right now to ensure our local community dogs don’t overwhelm him on the road. Keep an eye out for his signature white and brown coat—and the little heart-shaped mark on his forehead.
A Sacred Gift: The Sri Maha Bodhi Sapling
This walk is not just about the miles. It is about what the monks are carrying.
Before starting the trek in Dambulla, the delegation visited Anuradhapura. There, they were gifted a sacred sapling from the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi. If you grew up here, you know how massive this is. It is a direct physical connection to the oldest historically documented, human-planted tree in the world.
The monks are carrying this sapling by foot all the way to Colombo. After the walk wraps up, they will eventually take this sacred shoot back to Texas. It will be planted at a massive new center for Buddhist education currently being built in the US.
Your Next Steps: How to See the Procession
If you are currently traveling around the hill country or the western province, you have a rare chance to see this in person.
Check the Route: They are moving from Dambulla to Kandy, stopping at the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic. From there, they head down the Colombo-Kandy road through Kegalle, Yakkala, and Mahara.
Be Respectful: If you pull over to watch or take photos, remember this is a silent, meditative practice. Give the monks—and Aloka—plenty of space.
The Final Ceremony: If you are based in Colombo, head to Independence Square on April 28th. There will be a massive state ceremony, plus a cultural exhibition at the Gangaramaya Temple showcasing traditional Sri Lankan crafts like Dumbara weaving and lacquerwork.
