What Is the Kandy Esala Perahera?
The Kandy Esala Perahera is one of Sri Lanka’s most important cultural and religious festivals.

Book accommodation early. Hotels in central Kandy can become busy during the Perahera period, especially from 23 to 27 August.
Stay close to Kandy city centre if possible. Road closures and crowds can make travelling through central Kandy difficult during the evening.
Arrive early. Even though the processions begin around 6:30–7:00 PM, good viewing areas can fill much earlier.
Carry water. You may spend several hours waiting and watching the procession.
Wear comfortable clothes and shoes. Expect walking and long periods of standing or sitting.
