Begin your morning at the Elephant Transit Home, a conservation center located just on the border of Udawalawe. This facility cares for orphaned elephant calves until they are healthy enough to return to the wild. From a designated viewing platform, you can watch the young elephants eagerly follow their keepers into the open compound for their daily milk feeding.
Afterward, check out of your hotel and drive southeast to Yala National Park (90km / approx. 2 hrs). As one of Sri Lanka’s largest national parks, Yala features a diverse mix of dry woodlands and open grassy plains. It supports a wide range of wildlife, including elephants, spotted deer, sambar, wild buffalo, jackals, mongooses, and crocodiles. Yala is particularly well-known for having one of the highest leopard densities in the world. While these big cats are naturally secretive, spotting one is a clear highlight of the safari. The park also contains ancient ruins, adding a layer of historical interest to the natural landscape. In the late afternoon or evening, head out on a guided game drive to explore the reserve.
