Welcome to Sri Lanka. Upon your arrival at Bandaranaike International Airport in Colombo, your private guide will meet you for a direct transfer to your hotel in the Cultural Triangle (222km / approx. 4 hours). Spend the rest of the day relaxing and settling in at your accommodation. Overnight in Habarana

Start your morning with a short drive to the famous Sigiriya, often called Lion Rock (15km / approx. 20 mins). This massive rock formation, originally the magma plug of an extinct volcano, stands high above the surrounding landscape and is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Historians still debate its exact origins, suggesting it was either a grand royal fortress constructed by King Kashyapa in the 5th century or an early Buddhist monastery.

In the late afternoon, head to Minneriya National Park for a 2 to 3-hour jeep safari (20km / approx. 45 mins). The park is centered around the Minneriya Tank, an ancient reservoir built in the 3rd century AD. Its open plains and forests attract large herds of wild elephants that gather to feed and bathe. You might also spot sambar deer, toque macaques, painted storks, and flocks of cormorants. Depending on where the elephant herds are currently migrating, your guide may take you to the nearby Kaudulla National Park or Hurulu Eco Park instead to ensure the best wildlife viewing. Begin your drive south toward the city of Kandy, stopping along the way to explore the Dambulla Cave Temples (105km / approx. 3 hours). This UNESCO World Heritage site dates back to the 1st century BC and consists of five natural caves. The complex originally served as a hiding place for an exiled king, who later commissioned detailed rock carvings after reclaiming his throne. Following breakfast, begin your guided tour of Kandy. Later, travel to the Peradeniya Botanic Gardens (10km / approx. 45 mins) for a walk through its expansive grounds. Established in 1824 and bordered on three sides by the Mahaweli River, the gardens maintain one of the world’s largest plant collections. You will find an impressive orchid house, towering royal palms, giant trees, and a diverse collection of hardwoods like ebony, teak, mahogany, and satinwood.

In the late afternoon, visit a local hall to experience a live performance of traditional Sri Lankan music, drumming, and cultural dance.

After the show, visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic (Sri Dalada Maligawa), widely considered the most revered Buddhist site on the island. The temple is noted for its highly detailed woodwork and classic Sri Lankan art. You will attend during the evening ‘puja’ ceremony, joining local pilgrims who bring floral offerings and wait in line to view the golden casket believed to hold the sacred relic. Overnight in Kandy

Today features a transit from Kandy into the central highlands toward Nuwara Eliya. Board the train for a highly scenic rail journey, recognized for its visual appeal, taking you past bright green tea estates, rural villages, and over elevated bridges. Along the way, you can interact with local vendors selling snacks on the train. In the event that train tickets are unavailable, you will travel by road instead (115km / approx. 3 hours). This morning, leave the cool mountain climate behind and drive down to the western coast, arriving in Wadduwa (190km / approx. 5 hours). Once you reach your hotel, the remainder of the day is yours to rest and relax by the ocean. Overnight in Wadduwa

When it is time to depart, enjoy a direct transfer back to the airport for your onward flight (75km / approx. 1.5 hours). Alternatively, you can choose to continue your holiday by extending your stay on the beach.
