Have you ever seen giant Buddha statues carved from a single rock? Welcome to Gal Vihara in Polonnaruwa, one of the most peaceful and beautiful places in Sri Lanka. This ancient site is full of history, culture, and amazing stone carvings. If you’re traveling in Sri Lanka, Gal Vihara is a must-see spot.

Gal Vihara is located in Polonnaruwa, a historical city in the North Central Province of Sri Lanka. It is part of the Polonnaruwa Ancient City, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Gal Vihara was built in the 12th century by King Parakramabahu I. At that time, Polonnaruwa was the capital of Sri Lanka. The king wanted to build a peaceful place for Buddhist monks to live and meditate. He also wanted to bring all Buddhist monks together under one rule. So, he created Gal Vihara as part of a large monastery called “Uttararama” (meaning Northern Monastery).

The most amazing thing about Gal Vihara is the four large statues of the Buddha. They are all carved from one huge granite rock! Each statue shows a different pose and mood of the Buddha.

  • Height: 4.6 meters (15 feet)
  • The Buddha sits cross-legged on a lotus throne, with hands resting in his lap.
  • This statue shows peace and meditation.

  • Height: 7 meters (22 feet)
  • Arms folded across his chest, which is not a usual pose.
  • Some say this is the Buddha showing sadness; others say it is the Buddha’s student Ananda.
  • Very emotional and peaceful to look at.

  • Length: 14 meters (46 feet)
  • The Buddha is lying down on his right side.
  • This pose shows the moment when the Buddha passed away peacefully and entered nirvana.

All four statues were carved from one single granite rock face. That’s what makes Gal Vihara so amazing. The artists didn’t build these statues from parts—they carved them directly into the rock. This shows how skilled the stone workers were at that time.
